During my year of study at Rubika France (2016) I joined a team of 5 to participate in the Imagine Cup  game development competition. For its first phase we had to submit a PowerPoint presentation for a concept we wished to build In Unity from in the next phases. We called ours "Beasts". The team was composed of two designers, two game artists and one game programmer. My main responsibility was the level design.
In Beast the player incarnates a huntress that travels the world to fix unbalances in the wild. In the level we focused on, she is searching for a corrupted creature spreading its disease around and damaging its environment.
In terms of gameplay, our intention was to have players roam around an open map to gather materials, craft tools and weapons, gather intel about the creature and set up traps.
When the player felt ready, he or she could track and confront the creature in phased, epic boss battles similar to what can be found in Monster Hunter games.

Once we found a vision for our environments, one of the artist created concepts arts that I used to build a first plan of the map in SketchUp. We used it to explain our vision in the presentation.

What was a success :
  • We had a clear vision and were coordinated, we felt in advance compared to the competition.
  • We created a solid presentation with details on every aspect of the game.
What went wrong :
  • We did not qualify for the next round.
  • We did not receive feedback from the jury but our professors told us that the weakness of the project was probably its mishandled scope. Concepts like Beasts are usually found in the AA or AAA realm. We should have probably focus more on the core mechanics and not communicate so much on our grand vision.
